How To Customize Your Command Line Prompt in Unix

If you use command line with any Unix shell for your daily tasks, you have probably recognized by this stage how really useful a prompt can be. This is a way for you to instantly learn things like where you are in a directories tree, what user you’re currently logged in as, what’s the hostname of the system you’re working on, etc.

By default, your command line prompt may not be terribly useful, but it’s very easy to customize it, and I’d like to show you how exactly you can turn your dull command line prompt into the most useful line in any terminal window of yours.
